All the red meat animals (lamb, beef and venison) in New Zealand spend their life freely roaming in grass and eating grass. Feedlots and inside feeding is not popular or necessary in New Zealand.

The barn-raised chickens we source are cage-free and freely roaming within a controlled environment. This means our suppliers are independently audited, follow good farming practices and the chickens are not exposed to predators and are avoiding other outdoor risk factors.

We add sodium to our products to ensure a mineral balance for nutritional health, as part of creating a complete & balanced diet.

It is impossible to create a complete and balanced food with confidence that all the vitamins and minerals reach the set AAFCO requirements for our pets without some form of supplementation.
Many of the minerals are required in low quantities, but their existence in Kiwi Kitchens ingredients can be variable due to natural variation – for example, it often depends on the soil that the grass is grown on and the livestock is raised on. In many parts of NZ (as in some other parts of the world), selenium soil levels are low. Animals that feed from this soil can be lacking in selenium and as a result, the animal ingredients can be low too.

So, to be confident that the food has adequate levels of all required minerals, we supplement.

We use Tuna, Hoki and Mackerel fished from the cool deep waters surrounding New Zealand and New Zealand farmed Salmon. We add fish oil is from Hoki.

We include blackcurrants in our food, which have very high levels of antioxidants. It is an ultimate Superfood. The blackcurrants have a very strong dark purple colour. When added to the meat-based product, it has a dramatic effect on the colour. With the level of blackcurrants we use, it changes the predominately red or pink colour to a grey.

Freeze-drying is a gentle way to preserve petfood that helps lock in nutrients and flavour, without using high heat or chemicals. The process starts by quickly freezing fresh ingredients like meat, fish, or vegetables to maintain their natural shape and nutritional value. Then, the frozen food is placed in a vacuum chamber where the ice turns directly into vapor and disappears, a process called sublimation. This removes moisture without damaging the food’s structure or nutrients.
The result is a dry, shelf-stable product that still looks and tastes like the original fresh food. Pet parents love freeze-dried food because it’s nutrient-rich, flavourful, and convenient. It doesn’t need preservatives, has a long shelf life, and is easy to store and serve. Plus, pets often find it delicious thanks to its natural taste and texture.

‘We focus intently on the Quality Assurance of our Kiwi Kitchens products. Nothing is more important to us than safeguarding the health and safety of the pets we are lucky enough to feed.

We have a dedicated Quality team who are highly skilled and experienced in ensuring food quality and safety. They manage and monitor the composition and consistency of our ingredients (their source, processing and levels of inclusion in products). This includes rigorous testing for nutritional content, microbiological safety, and absence of harmful residues or contaminants from the point of entry into each manufacturing site, to the packaging, storage and transport of the finished product.

Our products are developed under the direction of animal nutritionists and in-house veterinarians. We thoroughly research the decisions we make when building a recipe, incorporating the most up-to-date science and emerging quality and safety concerns as we go. We also take ‘best practices’ from global industry standards in both nutrition and safe production, set out by AAFCO and FEDIAF.

Many of our suppliers approaches to quality assurance are endorsed and monitored by the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI, New Zealand) as well as the New Zealand Pet Food Trade Associations (NZPFA).

The Kiwi Kitchens Customer Care team are also central to our total quality management approach. They are responsible for listening to our customers and pet parents, receiving product feedback and recognising trends to ensure that no break in our quality assurance programme has occurred.  As the ears and voice of our business, this team has a central role in safeguarding product quality, and we’re thankful for the ongoing contact we have with the pets we feed, via their devoted owners.

Overall, our Quality Assurance program demonstrates a commitment to producing safe, nutritious, and high-quality products that pet owners can trust.
